Derek Jarman, 1991, Wikicommons

Friday 8th August, 2017
Guest Projects, Dalston

The Artist Dining Room is a series of dinners hosted by Guest Projects at the East London studio of artist Yinka Shonibare MBE RA.
Each dinner is cooked by a different chef, and inspired by a different artist. We cooked a dinner there in 2015 based on the surreal work of Salvador Dalí, and have been asked to return to present a menu to represent the life and work of Derek Jarman. An author, stage designer, poet, painter and filmmaker, Jarman was one of the most iconic British artists of his time, making feature length films such as Jubilee (1977) and Caravaggio (1986) as well as a several series of experimental Super8 films. He was a prominent Gay Rights activist who fought for the awareness of HIV and AIDS and made work about his own illness, to which he succumbed in 1994.

The evening will be hosted by curator Philipp Fürnkäs, who in 2010 exhibited a collection of Derek Jarman's films NUMBER FOUR: DEREK JARMAN - SUPER8 at the Julia Stoschek Foundation in Düsseldorf.

The menu will be inspired by the themes of Jarman's life and work, his cottage and garden on the shingle beach at Dungeness and his writings on colour and form.

     Girolles, grains and butter
     Brown shrimps and beach plants
     Lamb, beets and red fruit
Goat cheese, honey and bee pollen
     Pears, beach roses and roseroot

Tickets cost £45 (including booking fee) and can be booked at the Guest Projects ticket page. A vegetarian menu will be available, and can be chosen at the time of booking.
